Every year thousands of Americans die from preventable medical mistakes, complications, and misdiagnoses. One of the biggest dangers is medication screw-up. And many of us are also subjected to unnecessary surgeries and treatments. The Patient’s Playbook How To Save Your Life And The Life Of Those You Love, written by Leslie D. Michelson shows you how to navigate a broken health care system and get the best medical care for you or a loved one.
At some point in our lives, every one of us will face a health crisis. Mine began in May of 2000 when I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C (HCV). I was given the news over the phone by a nurse who did not even know what Hep C was or what caused it. My primary doctor did not call. Nor was any visit scheduled to discuss what the test results meant. I was just sent to a specialist and the appointment was over a month away.
In the meantime, I researched HCV, and what I found out scared me to death. There was no cure and I could end up with cirrhosis or cancer of the liver. When I saw the specialist I asked what I could do. He told me “Nothing, just go on about my life as usual.” I was not happy with that answer at all!
Eventually, I found a better specialist who ran tests to check my viral load and performed a liver biopsy to see if there was any liver damage. I started treatment in November of 2002. I have been free of Hep C since but no one told me the virus and/or the treatment would have long-term effects on my health. Maybe they didn’t know at the time and I certainly didn’t know what questions to ask.
